Internet, the Yin & Yang for most Parents

Once more the Mass Media Communication

I enjoy listen to the radio while I’m driving; in particular a program from a Psychologist named La Doctora Isabel (In Spanish). Yesterday, the theme was about: youths and internet.
The format of the program generally is receiving calls from listeners who may have concerns or just opinions about the topic in question. I was surprised when parents called desperate because their teenagers were using the internet to make profit doing prostitution, trading with naked pictures or just having ciber sex with the web cams.
Ohhh my God!! Was my exclamation.
Seriously, I could not believe what I was hearing and the most interesting, the ages of those kids 12-17 years old. The mothers, who called La Doctora Isabel, were asking what to do about it and the psychologist ask them this question:
Do you know how to use a computer?
The answer from most of them was; No!
Then the Doctor said with stronger voice:
"How all of you pretend to educate those little brains, if all of you are not doing anything to educate yourselves?"

The answers were excuses and the majority said they bought the computer because everybody owns one. About the internet, they also have not idea about.
I feel sad to hear cases like that, especially here in United States where you have many options to learn simple things like internet. For example: in the public libraries you can find free classes of computers, GED and English.

  • The New York Public Library

  • Danger is in the air, we cannot let the computers on the kid’s room because we (the parents) cannot have control of the internet access especially at nigh, when we think they are sleeping, other things are happening. Despite of the parental control tools accessible in most computers, kids are finding ways to have access to the pornographic sites. Also, pedophiles are taking advantage of the chats to afford kids, trying to get personal contact and sexual favors from them.
Awareness parents! Open your eyes and educate yourselves!!

Am I lucky my family had computers early on.... the ones with punchcards were crazy. Thankfully my mom knows how to use a computer, I actually taught her many years ago and then she went off and took classes by herself. Our family relies on communication via internet and yes even webcam. I was not at all surprised about the cybersex aspect of your entry, it has been going on for so many years, comouserve and top of all AOL made it posible. MSN had a different approach and then with meesnger with video or netmeeting( yest that is all part of your computers) the whole thing took off ... you would be amazed what you could find if you scratch the surface.
